India witnessed a new peak with states registering 12,881 new Coronavirus cases in a single day – the highest so far for the country and the third-highest daily increase in the world. The total number of COVID-19 cases zoomed to 366,946 patients.
The western state of Maharashtra continues to bear the brunt with over 3,300 people testing positive on Wednesday. It also recorded the highest number of deaths related to COVID-19 in India at 5,651 to date.
The national capital, Delhi, saw the addition of 2,414 new cases with at least 67 fatalities in the last 24 hours, with the number of cases reaching 47,102. Delhi’s Health Minister Satyendar Jain tested positive for Coronavirus on Wednesday evening.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had met the state chief ministers on June 16 and 17 where they discussed their future COVID-19 strategy. Their focus areas are prevention of the infection, treating and curing patients and at the same time boosting economic activity.
