The intra-Afghan Dialogue that concluded yesterday in Doha, Qatar, marks an important step towards achieving the peace the people of Afghanistan deserve and have long demanded, according to a statement released by the European Union.
The gathering, facilitated by Germany and Qatar, brought together a number of Afghans – including politicians representing all major political strands, Taliban and civil activists – in their personal capacity, to pave the way for formal negotiations.
Participants, who met amid ongoing US-Taliban talks, shared their aspirations for the start of an inclusive peace process and have committed to considering measures that would create a peaceful environment and an Afghanistan free from war.
“Attacks such as the one that took place in Ghazni on Sunday, killing and injuring innocent civilians, must be confined to the past”, EU statement pointed out.
The European Union has affirmed that it will continue to concretely support, politically and financially, an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process that preserves and builds on the political, economic and social achievements of the people of Afghanistan since 2001.
To this aim, the EU is working with the Afghan Government and all other interlocutors to ensure that peace negotiations are inclusive and respectful of the wish of Afghans to live in a peaceful, secure and prosperous country, where rights are upheld and vulnerable groups protected.
Security officials reported the arrest of deputy of Taliban’s Military Commission for northern provinces along with two of his comrades.
Security sources said that deputy of the Taliban’s military commission for northern provinces was arrested along with two of his comrades on Tuesday by Balkh police from Du Rahi Hairatan. The Taliban official was identified as Gul Haidar also known as Sayed Habib.
The source added that the individual was arrested while he wanted to travel to Kunduz province.
A pistol, a night vision, a map entitled “Afghan-Tajik”, 85000 Pakistani rupee, 30000AFG, three phones and a vehicle were seized by security forces from the detainee, as per source.
US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad has left for China from Doha.
Up until now, he was in Doha, Qatar for the US-Taliban negotiations and is now headed to China, after which he will return to Washington.
Meanwhile, the Intra-Afghan conference on peace also took place in Doha and concluded on Monday, and was much appreciated by the international community.
Presidential Spokesman Sediq Sediqi while speaking at a press conference in the Government Media and Information Center (GMIC) in Kabul said that the Qatar meeting has created more trust among Afghans.
Sediqqi added that they hope that the US and the Taliban agree on an peace agreement ahead of September 1.
He also clarified that President Ghani is closely monitoring the peace process.
“Afghanistan’s govt is an Islamic govt and it will never change. No individual or group can question this system,” President Ghani’s spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said, referring to a possible demand by the Taliban to change the government as part of a peace deal.
However, President Ghani’s spokesman criticized the lack of issue of freedom of the press in declaration of intra-Afghan dialogue conference. He added that the Afghan government is an Islamic government and that election is the only way of gaining power
“Afghan government is fully aware of details of US-Taliban talks, the talks are moving in positive direction, we hope a memorandum of understanding is reached before September”, Sediqqi said.
Four IS-K terrorists were killed in Kunar province, as per security officials.
The Afghan Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Tuesday that, as a result of security forces clearance operation in Sawkai district of the province 4 IS-K terrorists were killed.
One IS-K terrorist was detained in the operation and some arms and ammunition were seized by security forces, as per statement.
Kunar is among the provinces where IS-K fighters operate and previously 10 members of the group joint the government.
Local officials have reported the killing of seven members of a family as a result of an airstrike in Baghlan province.
Confirming the incident, press office of Baghlan province said on Tuesday that, as a result of airstrike carried out around 1AM to suppress Taliban insurgents in Katab Khel village in Dand-e-Shahabuddin district, a residential house was demolished and seven members of the family were killed.
However, following the incident, reports are published saying that Kabul – North highway is closed in Du-Saraka area of Pol-e-Khumri in protest concerning the attack.
The Afghan Afghanistan has reported the killing of five Taliban insurgents including an Uzbek citizen of the group in Faryab province.
Commando special forces carried out an operation in Tuklai Khwaja Namosi area in surrounding of Pashtun Kot district of Faryab, as a result a foreign Uzbek citizen of Taliban group and four insurgents were killed, Mohammad Hanif Rezaee spokesman of 209th Shahin Corps told Reporterly on Tuesday.
He added that, a key Taliban commander was also detained in the operation with three weapons.
Rezaee also emphasized that Taliban are defeated in direction of Maimana city to Belcharagh district and some villages including strategic areas of Taliban insurgents have been cleared and supply convey of army has entered the district through ground route.
Moreover, Three Taliban insurgents were killed and three others were injured in a clash with Afghan National Police (ANP).
The clash took place on Sar-e-Pul- Jowzjan highway.
Two Afghan National Policemen were wounded during the clash.
Ministry of Interior announced that the General Command of Police Special Units (GCPSU) launched a security operation which took place in the vicinity of the Alishang district of Laghman. As a result, two men were arrested accused of helping Taliban terrorists.
Moreover, the General Command of Police Special Units (GCPSU) and Afghan National Army (ANA) launched a joint clearance operation in Sayed Abad district of Maidan Wardak and as a result, eight villages of Sayed Abad district cleared of terrorists.
In another report, Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) conducted a joint clearance operation in Char Kant district of Balkh. As a result, Balkh’s Char Kant cleared of terrorists.
The NATO in Afghanistan Twitter page announced that today, Tuesday, is Ms Holly Holzer’s first day as the new NATO Deputy Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan.
Ms Holzer has extensive knowledge and experience of Afghanistan and as a US diplomat, her expertise in Afghanistan is a great asset for the NATO as well as the country.
Earlier this year in March, Ambassador Sir Nicholas Kay took over as the NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan.
Security forces have reported that 162 individuals were detained in the last two weeks in Kabul due to connection with various crimes.
Moinuddin Seyal, the head of criminal investigation department of Kabul Police said on Tuesday in a video message that security forces in Kabul have arrested 162 suspects for various crimes during the past two weeks.
Seyal added that, out of the detained individuals, 95 of them were arrested over crimes such as murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, organized crime, vehicle theft and 67 others were detained in connection with smuggling and selling of narcotics from different parts of Kabul city and districts
Head of Criminal Investigation Department of Kabul Police emphasized that during this period 240 addicts from different parts of Kabul and were sent for treatment in related hospitals.
Qatar’s Special Envoy for Counterterrorism and Mediation in Conflict Resolution Mutlaq bin Majid Al Qahtani has announced in statement about the the success and positive result of the two-day Intra-Afghan Peace talks held in Doha under the auspices of the State of Qatar and Germany.
“We are very pleased today fo reach a joint statement as a first step to
Peace and we thank them for their support on the ongoing talks in Qatar which they consider important and positive in ending the conflict in Afghanistan”, Qahtani expressed.
Qahtani also emphasised that what has been reached may be only a first step to find an understanding between the conflicting parties, noting the agreement of all on the importance & the need to build on them & continue efforts, saying “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a step”.
The intra-Afghan conference on peace was held in Doha for two days and concluded on Monday, with several conclusions and blueprint for peace agreed upon by Afghan delegates and Taliban representatives.
US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad wrote on Twitter that the Intra-Afghan Conference on Peace concluded on Monday, on a “positive note”.
“I congratulate the participants-Afghan society representatives across generations, senior government officials and Taliban, for finding common ground”, he wrote.
Khalilzad also thanked Qatar and Germany for organizing the conference and said, “This dialogue gives hope for further progress to end the 40-year long war and the terrible suffering of the Afghan people. We will persist in our efforts by resuming our talks with the Taliban later today.”
