With the ceasefire set to end at midnight today, the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) echoed the international community and called for its extension.
In its statement and on social media, the AIHRC asked for the continuation of the ceasefire and start of the intra-Afghan peace talks to “end violence, protect the lives and security of citizens and increase their access to human rights.”
“The parties to the conflict are responsible for the lives and security of the people,” the group emphasised.
The AIHRC was echoing what the international community and the Afghan government have already expressed. The Afghan government is set to release about 900 Taliban prisoners today to build trust and continue the ceasefire. The Taliban has yet to respond.
