Acting FM Assured Lawmakers that Issue of Afghan Refugees in Iran Will be Seriously Addressed

The Acting Foreign Minister, Hanif Atmar has assured the Afghan lawmakers at the Lower House of Parliament that the issue of Afghan refugees in Iran will be seriously addressed.

“Our discussion with Iranian officials ended with tension.
But all diplomatic channels will be used to address the issue,” Atmar said.

He told the Members of Parliament that they have agreed that a joint team from Afghan and Iranian officials will probe the incident.

He added, so far, 16 of the Afghan nationals have been rescued, 18 to 20 are missing, and 16 bodies have been found.

Earlier, the Afghan officials have launched a mission to retrieve bodies of migrants from a river in a western province after reports emerged that Iranian border guards tortured and threw Afghans into the river to prevent their entry into Iran.

However, the Iranian consulate in Herat denied the allegations of torture and subsequent drowning of dozens of Afghan migrant workers by border police.
