U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad arrived in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Wednesday. President Ashraf Ghani’s office confirmed the envoy’s arrival.
Reports suggest that Khalilzad is in Kabul to meet with the Afghan government leaders to press them to start talks with the Taliban amidst the increased attacks across the country. Reports indicate the uptick in violence could derail the U.S.-Taliban peace deal that was signed earlier this year.
This comes after Khalilzad’s stop in Doha, Qatar, three days ago, where he spoke about facilitating and setting a new date for the intra-Afghan peace talks.
