Khalilzad Says Substantive Progress Made in Talks with Taliban

US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad wrote on Twitter that after 6 days of consultations, the current talks were “the most productive session to date”.

“We made substantive progress on all 4 parts of peace agreement: counter terrorism assurances, troop withdrawal, participation in intra-Afghan dialogue, and negotiations, and permanent and comprehensive ceasefire”, Khalilzad explained on Twitter.

The US-Taliban talks of this time were the seventh such talks between the two parties since last year. The previous couple of talks have also been held in Doha, Qatar, like the present one.

The US-Taliban negotiations have paused just for two days and is set to resume on July 9 once the the intra-Afghan dialogue is set to conclude in Doha.

It is said that based on the conclusions of agreement regarding main points between US and Taliban, a path for meaningful intra-Afghan talks would be paved.
