Khalilzad Meets Youth and Women Leaders in Kabul, Emphasises on Safe Future and Women’s Participation

US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad had an exchange of ideas on the Afghan Peace Process with leading female Afghan politicians & senior govt officials and discussed progress Afghan women have made & their concerns about the future. “US policy is that women should be at the table in intra-Afghan dialogue & negotiations”, Khalilzad tweeted.

Khalilzad also began his day at a Youth Peace Conference organized by students who debated how to strengthen their voice & protect civil rights in intra-Afghan dialogue and negotiations.

“Afghanistan has been at war longer than these students have been alive. They demand the opportunity to live in peace. I applaud their efforts and they have my support”, Khalilzad expressed.

The US special envoy stopped by a bazaar to meet entrepreneurs, and was glad to see women’s full participation in society and in Afghanistan’s economic future is essential.

“I went home with lapis and saffron, not to mention tremendous respect and inspiration. Unexpectedly, one booth at the bazaar was run by Afghan legend, Sharbat Gula. Same piercing eyes from her “Afghan Girl” NatGeo cover. Like all Afghans, she deserves to see an end to violence followed by a lasting peace”, he wrote.
