Afghan Lawmakers Fight Over Month-Long Speaker Election Issue

Afghanistan’s parliamentarians got involved in yet another brawl amid a standoff over the appointment of a new speaker on Wednesday .

Some MPs were seen fighting each other near the speaker’s seat while others pulled down the speaker’s desk. The clash happened after supporters Mir Rahman Rahmani took him to the speaker’s seat.

Rahmani ran for the speakership of the Lower House last month with his rival being Kamal Nasir Osoli and was declared winner by his supporters, but his opponents said he had not secure the minimum majority of the votes.

MPs are considering a previously-deemed invalid ballot that would favour Rahmani for review, but they are divided whether it should be done through card check or secret ballot.
