Chabahar Port Exempted from Iran Sanctions

US secretary of state Mike Pompeo, confirmed in an email to Reuters that the Chabahar port in Iran is exempted from sanctions on Iran.

“Chabahar port is important in economic growth of Afghanistan, so the Chabahar port is exempted from Iran sanctions,” Pompeo said.

The effect of this is that Afghanistan can continue import of fuel from Iran. Some 6 other countries have been additionally given waiver in the Iran sanctions.

The decision comes days after US principle deputy state secretary Alice Wells visited Afghanistan and met with President Ghani and other officials.
